I forgot how hard it is getting back into the swing of training. Still haven't gotten to going 3 times a week, but next week I will start. I always forget how good and energised I feel after each training.
People at Legion are training hard. Some are off to Phuket Top Team (random note, blogger doesn't think Phuket is a proper word and wants to change it to ketchup! wtf) to train with Olavo Abreu and the Leone Brothers and more great world class MMA and BJJ guys/girls. In about 3 weeks time there is National Championships on in Newcastle, Australia. Should be a pretty good turn out. Hopefully there will be some great BLACK BELT matches to watch, there always are.
There is a local Canberra comp coming up also.
Great opportunity for people to see what is out there, see the competition from other clubs etc.
Sad news for UFC and MMA fans today. Chael Sonnen retires after failing a random drug test that puts him out of the The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Grand Final (Wanderlei Silva was also already out, also having failed a drug testing.) In Sonnen's case it seems that the medication he has to take for his health has something in it that means he fails the testing. He is making a choice of health and well being over his fighting career. A good choice I say.

Canberra Girls
So it's been decided that we are starting a group for Canberra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Girls. There aren't a lot of girls in Canberra at each club so we want to try get us together at least once a week to train and get to know each other and hopefully try find other girls to join in. It really is a great sport and lots of fun. We want to show this to other people. We also want to show girls places where it is safe and comfortable with other girls and if during the week they would like to train then come train with great higher grades and guys that are going to be friendly nice. It occurs to me that people travel for their jobs and that guys might be more comfortable just popping into any club, girls may not be, so this gives them places.
Tell your friends and family. Share the news around. GIRLS THERE ARE PLACES IN CANBERRA TO TRAIN! YAY

MMA Weights and Winning
Most competitions have 8 weight classes. (random fun fact lbs is for star sign Libra. The symbol for Libra is the scales)
Flyweight - 57kg/125lbs
Bantamweight - 61kg/135lbs
Featherweight - 66kg/145lbs
Lightweight - 70kg/155lbs
Welterweight - 77kg/170lbs
Middleweight - 84kg/185lbs
Light Heavyweight - 93kg/205lbs
Heavyweight - 120kg/265lbs
The lighter end of the spectrum is known for being quick and agile, while the heavier weights are known for their hard hands (knockout power) and good grappling (mostly wrestling, judo and sambo)
For ways to win you can do the following to your opponent
Knockout - K.O - pretty self explanatory (you are unconscious for any period of time)
Technical Knockout - TKO - the referee thinks the opponent is unable to continue the match
Submission - again, pretty self explanatory (arm bar, kimora, rear naked choke, triangle, etc)
Decision - The fighters fight all rounds (3-5) and a panel of 3 judges score each round (usually out of 10) and the person with the most points wins. These points are based on the number of take downs, submission attempts, how many kicks and punches landed)
- Unanimous Decision is when all 3 judges agree on the winner
- Split Decision is when 2 judges agree on 1 fighter winning and the 3rd judge
scores in the other fighters favour
- Majority Decision is when 2 judges agree on a winner and the 3rd judge says the
fight was a draw
- Minority Draw is when 1 judge scores in favour of one fighter and the 2 other
judges agree the fight was a draw

More To Come
Mixed Martial Arts is a pretty misunderstood sport. It is harder than people know, especially the training and sacrifices and it is also a lot less violent than people think. There are actual rules to make it safer like - no eye gouging, no biting, no knees to the head when arms or hands are touching the ground, head butting, groin area, striking the back of the head and more.
Over the few days I'll be telling you more about MMA and where it started to it's international following.
MMA is a sport that combines a mix of different martial arts that involve striking and grappling. Some of these are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Samba, Wrestling, Boxing and Judo. Before the UFC there were competitions around the world that involved opponents using a mix of martial arts against each other. Some time in the 1920's Brazil started something called Vale Tudo (full-contact unarmed combat event) and was brought to the US in 1993 by the Gracie family and the UFC was created. This was the year that the term Mixed Martial Arts or MMA was coined in a review of UFC 1. UFC 1 - 3 was a bit of a free for all and had boxers against wrestlers and taekwon doe black belts against judo black belts, there were not a lot of rules and it was usually very one sided, but still entertaining. It probably wasn't until PRIDE FC was formed in 1997 that it became more internationally recognised and followed, especially in Japan and Russia.

Girls Of Jiu Jitsu
While this is a more of a male dominated sport, there are women out there that are just as good (if not better ;) than the men).
Kyra Gracie
28 Yrs old.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Lightweight (58kg/141lbs)
Kyra Gracie is pretty much Brazilian Jiu Jitsu royalty being the grand daughter of Robson Gracie (son to Carlos Gracie Sr.). Having grown up around her uncles, black belts Ralph, Ryan and Renzo, Kyra was around the sport all the time and trained for fun as a toddler. When she was about 11 she started to train seriously and competing once she was a YELLOW BELT. It was such a male dominated sport at the time her family felt that Kyra should quit Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but she was determined to keep going, getting her BLUE BELT in her mid teens. Kyra stayed an active competitor her whole BJJ career, now she is a 2nd DEGREE BLACK BELT under her uncle Carlos Gracie Jr at Gracie Barra, California.
- 2005/2007/2011 GOLD Abu Dhabi World Championships
- 1998/1999/2000/2001/2005/2008 GOLD Brazilian National Championships
- 2010 World Championships.
Kyra is now teaching BJJ, looking into breaking into the MMA circuit and does multiple seminars, interviews and some acting in movies and tv shows.
Hillary Williams
25 Yrs old.
Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. Middleweight (69kg/152lbs)
Hillary started training in 2006 at Westside MMA under Roli Delgado and Matt Hamilton. She started competing as soon as she could and started winning comps left and right. In 2010 Hillary was given her BLACK BELT just a short 7 months after receiving her BROWN BELT, making it 4 years from the time she was a white belt. Hillary quickly became a dominant figure in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community, especially for women. Some of her career highlights are
- 2007 GOLD Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships - white belt div
- 2007/2008 GOLD Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships - purple belt div
- 2010 GOLD World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup Trials - brown/black div
- 2010 GOLD World Championships IBJJF - brown/black belt div
Hillary currently studies Biology at the University of Arkansas.
Mackenzie Dern
21 Yrs old
Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Featherweight (58kg/129lbs)
Being the daughter of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu BLACK BELT, Wellington Dias, Mackenzie was around the sport from the birth and started training when she was just 3 years old. As a child Mackenzie competed in every comp and by the age of 14 she was already competing as an adult BLUE BELT and winning. With a BJJ lineage like her's (Carlos Gracie Sr., Helio Gracie, Royler Gracie, Wellington Dias) it is not hard to see that she holds the female world record of the most consecutive wins at the World Championships and the first female ever to fight in the Metamoris Invitational Draw. At such a young age Mackenzie has a lot of accomplishments under her... black BELT, which she received in 2012.
- 2008 to 2010 GOLD World Championships - blue belt div
- 2011 GOLD Pan America Championships - purple belt div
- 2011 GOLD World Championships - purple belt div
- 2012 GOLD Pan America Championships - brown belt div
- 2012 GOLD World Championships - brown belt div
- 2012 BRONZE Abu Dhabi World Pro - brown belt div
- 2013 SILVER Abu Dhabi Pro - black belt div

This is not a club. It is a support network founded in 2010 by PURPLE BELT, Jess Fraser. AGIG is helping to promote Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for women and encouraging them to train. You can find a selection of gyms on their website for VIC, NSW, QLD and WA. If you don't live in any of these states you can always contact them and they will be able to tell you a suitable gym near you. AGIG understand that it is not easy for women to get into the sport or even feel like they are in a good and safe environment, so they get out there and show that there are places like this and are there to support and help you
Clothes
Here are the new Legion XIII tshirts. Designed by yours truly. A little different from what it was originally but that's ok. (white is the printed, black is the actual design and below are last years jumpers)
Lately
So the 10th of May was a Triple Bull Jiu Jitsu competition in Wollongong. Unfortunately only one person could compete, Stephen Owens in the adult purple belt gi and no-gi. While there was no medals, he went very well against the current top ranked purple belt giving him a lot of hassle and only losing by 2 points.

Competing
Triple Bull Jiu Jitsu has a comp on this weekend at Wollongong. If you have any interest in the sport come down and have a look. Watching the kids and black belts compete is always fun. You will see some really great (and let's face it, not so great) skills. IBJJF have also released a new set of rules.
Kids Classes at Legion XIII in Canberra also start today.

Coaches Challenge
I live for coaches challenge episodes when it comes to The Ultimate Fighter and TUF 3 Brazil did not disappoint. Ok so that is a lie, i was a little disappointed that it didn't go for longer or was funny like the TUF Nations Aus v Can but that's ok. Sonnen and Silva had a little bit of a soccer comp. A few drills and the first one to score 3 goals. I won't the rest away. You should watch and see it for yourselves!

All Women!
For the first time ever there is going to be an all women's The Ultimate Fighter for season 20. It is a new weight class, straw weight (115 pounds or 52 Kg) There is no title holder at this weight, obviously, so the winner will become the straw weight womens champion! So this is a massive opportunity for these girls. Check out this article for behind the scenes.
There are amazing women out there and more and more girls are getting into the sport. It really is a great way to get fit and learn self defense.

More About The Club
Legion XIII is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club based out of Perth, Western Australia under Grayson West with a club in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. The Canberra branch is affiliated with Peter De Been (based out of Melbourne, Victoria) and trains with Phuket Top Team (Phuket, Thailand) at least twice a year with Olavo Abreu and Anthony and Andrew Leone.
This club is arguably the best in Canberra, with a Black Belt at the head, a brown belt, a few purple belts, roughly 9 blue belts and a range of beginners to 4 stripe white belts. With in a year this club as grown exponentially, starting with less that 20 members and now close to 40. Everyone is committed to not only their own growth but to each other. People will come in out of class times to work with each other when asked, even when not competing in comps and events the team mates will come and watch to support each other. This isn't just a club, it is a bunch of friends. It makes for a really great training environment.
Legion XIII started out at Hills Academy, Canberra under Adam Saunderson as a brown belt, but now they are their own club that trains out of Stockade Training Centre Dickson, Canberra still under Adam Saunderson but now as a black belt, given to him by Olavo Abreu last year.
The Canberra club is now looking to expand its horizons with kids classes starting on the 1st of May. They are for 9-13 Yrs old, boys and girls. 14 yrs and above will be integrated into the adult classes, if the parents want their child in the kids classes there may be special permission granted after talking to the head coaches. Kids 8 yrs and below may be able to join the kids classes after talking to the head coaches and agreeing to stay for the whole class. These preferences are because kids are a lot different in the way they concentrate and interact when they are 8 and below and 15 and above.
With branching out, the next step will be to aim at getting more women into the club. There is currently a blue belt and 2 white belts at the club. I think that women are a little apprehensive to get involved in something that is so male heavy, and also they might not like the idea being so close to the guys during drills and rolling. But in this club the guys are really great, gentle, take care of the girls ( when guys have rolled to rough with the girls one of the higher grades, purple and above, will then roll with that guy just as rough if not more so to teach them a lesson. I should mention that the same thing happens if a higher grade does this with a beginner).
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn't just a great life skill for kids in help with confidence, making friends, discipline, health and fitness but for adults as well. It is never too late to get involved, or too early :)

What's Happening At The Moment
The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championships were on last week. You can find most of the fights on YouTube. Check out one of the womens finals too.
The Legion XIII Kids Classes start Thursday at 430pm. Sign up your kids, take a look. It will be great. If you need anymore reasons to sign up for kids classes other than it's awesome, here are 10 reasons why your kids can benefit.
If you’re still concerned about encouraging violent tendencies or
teaching your child to fight, it may be helpful to visit a few
dojos/gyms in your area. Speak with the instructors, administrators and
other parents to get an idea of how things operate, and hold off on
forming a negative opinion of the martial arts until you’ve done a bit
of exploratory research. You may even find that training is the perfect
activity for your entire family to do together! - (http://www.kenneymyers.com/blog/10-reasons-martial-arts-benefits-kids/)
The Ultimate Fighter Season 19 just started and there looks like some real great guys going into the house. UFC Jones v Teixeira was on today.
3rd of May is Brace in Sydney and 2 of our Legion XIII guys are competing. If you are in Sydney go take a look. There can be some good amateur fights (and some not so good ones, lets be honest)
There is so much happening, get out there and see what there is, get involved. You will love it.

Today’s kids are so accustomed to receiving instant gratification that lessons in self-restraint and discipline aren’t always easy to come by. Kids with a martial arts background, however, are continually reminded of how essential self-discipline is.
- Boosting Socialization Skills – Kids who don’t always thrive in highly social environments may find it easier to get to know people and make new friends when they’re in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. The kids on the playground may not always have much common ground, but devotees to the martial arts are able to get to know one another through shared pursuits. Partner-driven forms like jiu jitsu can also foster camaraderie, as they force kids to pair off and build their skills together.
- Encouraging Physical Activity – Limiting screen time is a great idea when it comes to getting kids off the couch and encouraging them to be more active, but it only goes so far. Enrolling an inactive child in such a physically demanding pastime not only discourages the sedentary lifestyle she’s used to, but also gives her an enjoyable activity that inspires her to keep moving.
- Learning to Set and Achieve Goals – Most forms of martial arts are based around an accomplishment system of colored belts that signify the wearer’s degree of skill. When your child strives toward each new belt, he’s learning valuable lessons about setting and reaching his goals.
- Increased Self-Esteem – Confidence comes with achievement, so your child’s self-esteem level will get a boost with every new move he masters and every belt he earns. Kids who struggle with a low sense of self-worth usually become more confident as time progresses while they’re enrolled in a martial arts class.
- Instilling a Sense of Respect – Learning any martial arts style will require your child to show her instructor unflinching respect. Today’s kid culture doesn’t always include respect for authority, adults or those in advanced positions. When she goes to her karate or tae kwon do class, though, your child will be learning lessons in respect along with new moves.
- Encouraging Non-Violent Conflict Resolution – Thinking that martial arts instruction promotes violent behavior is justified if your only experience with the activity comes from television or movies. In fact, many defensive styles teach kids peaceful, non-violent conflict resolution skills and emphasize the importance of avoiding a physical altercation.
- Improving Listening Skills – In order to master the skills she’s being taught and advance through the belt ranks, your child will have to exercise superior listening skills. Kids who aren’t always adept when it comes to paying attention to what they’re told can benefit from the verbal instruction and one-on-one work in her dojo.
- Developing Teamwork Skills – Whether he’s breaking boards to get a new belt or sparring in a practice setting to master a new maneuver, there are few things that your child does in his martial arts classes that will be done on his own. Working together to learn new things and accomplish goals is an important life lesson for kids to learn, and instruction in the martial arts can help your child learn that lesson.
- Improvement in Other Areas of Life – The benefits of martial arts training don’t end in the dojo. The boost in confidence, increased fitness level and new cooperation skills will also help your child navigate the academic and social aspects of school, affect his behavior at home and have an all-around good influence on him as he develops into an adult.
The Ultimate Fighter Season 19 just started and there looks like some real great guys going into the house. UFC Jones v Teixeira was on today.

TUF
Who watched the TUF Nations finale?! pity that no aussies made the grand final, but that's ok. I think it is a bit harsh that Tyler got chucked out of the UFC from a Twitter post made about a year before he even got into the UFC or the UFC house.
TUF season 19 is on now so you don't have to worry about getting withdrawals.
TUF Brazil season 3 last week was amazing, with Wanderlai and Chael going at it. Have to admit I have been waiting to see that! I am not sure what to make of Silva as a coach. Sonnen we have seen before of US TUF. He seems like a really good coach and his teams always love him. He seems there for the fighters, not for the show. Which is obviously what you want in a coach. People should really get on to the The Ultimate Fighter seasons because there is not only entertainment, but they teach you nutrition and about cutting weight and there are some really good fights and training techniques.

In May
Coming up in May are 2 comps. One is a BJJ Gi and No-Gi comp and the other is a BJJ no time limit and no points, submission only comp.
If you are interested in seeing what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about this is the perfect opportunity to check it out. If you are training, no matter how long for, competitions are a good way to see how your skills stack up on a national scale. it also helps you improve and see where the holes in your game are.
some people don't like entering competitions till they are a higher level in their belt/weight catagory but they are really missing out on a great opportunity to learn, grow and also have a chance to make new friends nationally. It gives you great connections if you ever travel and people to come train with you at your own gym to help with you and your team mates.

Team News
There was a grading session yesterday. The guys/girls were put through their paces for 4 hours just for the chances to be moved up a belt colour. Lets see who gets a BLUE BELT or PURPLE BELT at the Andrew Leggett Seminar, 12-13 April.
There was lots of support out on the mats from the coloured belts. Legion XIII isn't just a team but they are support network of friends.
I can't say it enough, this club is amazing and the atmosphere is electric. Everyone is friends and hang out outside of club events and training. It is a fun environment, but tough training. Perfect balance.
Also keep a look out for kids classes coming your way
